Engineers used off-the-shelf components to design and build a portable assay device capable of metering 5 uL from the sample and a programmable 50-300 uL of multiple cartridge-based reagents. A custom mixing chamber was designed to work with an integrated optical detection system. Pilot production was completed at SwRI.

A variety of microfluidic technologies have been used by engineers at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to monitor, diagnose, and treat disease.
